Who are we?
Plato tells of a cave whose inhabitants lived their entire lives chained
to a bench, facing a wall on which shadows play. The people in the cave
spend their entire lives staring at shadows of objects on a wall and believing
the shadows to be the reality. Finally, one of them dares to break the
chains and turns to face the light. This one cave dweller ventures outside
of the cave. At first the brightness blinds him with unforgiving pain,
but this he endures in his quest for the truth and the pain soon subsides.
Soon he is able to see the world as it really is. He turns to his fellow
cave dwellers and tries to show them the light, but they refuse, in fear.
In the cave they remain, chained, in the dark, seeing only shadows.
Most atheists were raised with religious dogma. To those of us who dared
to face the light. To thoseof us who dared to seek the truth no matter
where it led, we dedicate this site.
For those who have never known the cave, be grateful.

And the books?
If you've ever tried to find the Atheist section at your local bookstore,
well... You know what we mean. You are lucky if they even have one. And
where do they put it? In the middle of the religion section quite often.
We have many hours rummaging through tons of titles of religious dogma
for a single Sagan book. And when you do find a book, it is often a diatribe
against atheists. And if you want evolution? Abiogenesis? Big Bang
theory? Well that's another section all together.
Shopping online has improved this a great deal, but it still has its foibles.
A really good atheist book may have a deplorable rating because so many
christians have taken the time and trouble to complain about it.
It has been our experience that the best books we've read about atheists
and atheism have been books that other atheists have recommended. Hence
the idea of Atheist Books.
Our books have been read, and recommended, by atheists - for atheists.
Does it get any better? So feel free to jump in and browse our database
with complete confidence that what you find here is "Atheist Approved".
And if you are an atheist that would like to recommend a book for our
site, please e-mail us at: info@atheistbooks.com.
Enjoy.
